Are you lactose intolerant?

You may be lactose intolerant if you have cramps, bloating, gas or diarrhea after you eat dairy foods. These symptoms occur when your body isn’t making enough lactase.

Lactase is needed to digest lactose, the natural milk sugar found in dairy foods.

Lactose intolerance is different than a cow’s milk allergy. Lactose intolerance is a problem in the digestive system. Allergies are related to the immune system. True milk allergies are much less common.

It is estimated that about 1/4 of the American population is lactose intolerant. Lactose intolerance is more prevalent in different ethnic groups:

  • Up to 80% of African Americans
  • 80% to 100% of American Indians
  • 90% to 100% of Asian Americans
  • 15% of Caucasians
